Within the scope of the project "Waste in Action", a British delegation came to Rouen from 17th to 19th March 2010 in order to attend the 3rd steering committee meeting. The nine members of the delegation who were welcomed by SMEDAR's Chairman, Patrice Dupray, gave a progress report of the different ongoing projects with their French colleagues.

The steering committees are organized twice a year, in France and England. They are "key" stages of the partnership, and enable the real progress in the achievements to be assessed, as well as being a reminder of the aims of future co-operation.

Each meeting works in detail on two or three projects. Hence these three days highlighted advertising to increase inhabitants awareness in the recycling of waste and eco-consumption, as well as action taken with SME/SMI in order to help them manage their waste, and lastly the waste trails recently installed or being created.

Amongst these different themes, the British partners presented the evolution of the redevelopment of the Pebsham landfill site into an interactive trail for school children. SMEDAR also had important information to impart with the creation of the Internet site for the "juniors" (ongoing), and "theatre workshops" in middle schools.

The members of the delegation then visited the waste-to-energy Isséane plant at Issy-les-Moulineaux, as well as the France Plastiques Recyclage unit.

The "Waste in action" project groups together SMÉDAR and East Sussex County Council for three years (2008-2011). The project is within the scope of the European Interreg IVa programme and aims at optimizing waste management on both sides of the Channel. It is 50% financed by ERDF funds.
